Sukhumvit after dark

A crawl up Bangkok's neon spine — the sky bars, glowing canopies and late lounges of Sukhumvit, in the right order.

Sukhumvit doesn’t really start until the sun gives up. The traffic thins, the neon kicks in, and the whole spine of the road — from the embassy end down to the BTS-stitched stretches of Ekkamai and beyond — tilts upward. The good nights happen above street level. Here’s how to climb them in the right order.

Go up while there’s still light

Catch the day before it’s gone. Aim for a table at Cielo Sky Bar over in Phra Khanong, where the 46th floor buys you a long, clean horizon and the sky does its slow burn from gold to bruise-purple. This is your altitude opener — order something cold, claim the rail, and watch the grid below switch on light by light. It’s a quieter, more elevated stretch of the city than the chaos closer to Asok, which is exactly the point. You want height first, while the view is still doing the heavy lifting.

As the sky goes full dark, drop a few floors and a few degrees of formality. Pastel Rooftop Bar & Mediterranean Dining sits at floor 22 in the thick of Sukhumvit, and it hits different once the dinner crowd warms up. The glow gets softer, the plates come out, the night loosens its collar. This is the eat-and-linger leg of the crawl — settle in, let a long meal stretch past its natural end, and let the skyline do the talking behind you. Pace yourself. The night’s barely begun.

Then chase the late stuff

Push east into Ekkamai, where the energy gets younger and the music gets a pulse. Tulum Sky Bar is where you land when you’re not ready to call it — a looser, later room with a beachy, after-hours swagger that runs well past midnight. By now you’re warmed up, the city’s a carpet of light below, and nobody’s checking the time.

A few house rules: book the early tables ahead, especially around sunset, when everyone has the same idea. Dress smart-casual — Sukhumvit rooftops notice. And if you’d rather plot your own route, the full map of all Bangkok rooftops is right here. Start high. Work later. That’s the only rule that matters.
